Taobao international shipping does not have one universal price. The useful number is the total landed cost after the products are packed: product price, delivery within China, service and packing charges, international freight, insurance, and any destination taxes or clearance fees.
Before you pay for an order, get an estimate using the product links and destination postcode. Before you authorize international dispatch, ask for the final packed weight, dimensions, chargeable weight, route, and an itemized quote. That comparison tells you whether Taobao's available delivery option, independent forwarding, or local purchase offers the best value for this order.
What actually determines the shipping charge?
International freight is usually affected by five things:
- Actual weight: the weight shown on the warehouse scale after packing.
- Dimensional weight: the space the carton occupies. The route applies its own divisor and rounding rule, so use the formula stated on the quote.
- Destination: country, postcode, remote-area status, and final-mile coverage can change the available routes and surcharges.
- Contents: batteries, liquids, powders, magnets, food, branded goods, and oversized or fragile items may require a different route or may be refused.
- Service level: express, economy air, dedicated lines, and sea options have different acceptance rules, minimum charges, tracking, and estimated transit windows.
The chargeable weight is commonly the higher of actual and dimensional weight, but the exact calculation belongs to the selected route. A light, bulky carton can therefore cost more than a compact, heavier one.
Calculate the total landed cost
Use this checklist instead of comparing freight rates alone:
Product price + China domestic delivery + purchasing or payment fee + warehouse options + packing materials + international freight + insurance + duties, taxes, clearance, and final-mile charges
Separate each line into confirmed, estimated, optional, payable after packing, or potentially payable at destination. Ask whether the quote includes fuel, remote-area, residential, oversize, address-correction, customs-clearance, and final-delivery charges.
Taxes depend on the destination, product classification, origin, value, and current local rules. Do not rely on an old duty-free threshold in a blog post. Check the destination customs authority before ordering and declare the product name, quantity, and transaction value accurately.
A simple dimensional-weight example
Suppose the final carton measures 40 × 30 × 25 cm and weighs 4 kg. If the quoted route uses a divisor of 5,000, the example dimensional weight is:
40 × 30 × 25 ÷ 5,000 = 6 kg
Under a higher-of-the-two rule, the shipment would be rated from 6 kg before any route-specific rounding or surcharge. This is an illustration, not a YDA rate: another route may use a different divisor or billing increment.

When can consolidation reduce cost?
Consolidation can remove duplicate outer cartons and reduce repeated minimum charges when several Taobao sellers send separate parcels. Repacking may also reduce dimensional weight when the original boxes contain unnecessary empty space.
It does not always produce the lowest or safest result. Consider split shipping when:
- heavy items could crush clothing or fragile products;
- batteries, liquids, or other restricted items need a separate route;
- one combined carton would trigger an oversize or overweight charge;
- a collectible or retail box must remain intact;
- one late seller would delay urgent goods.

Compare Taobao delivery, forwarding, and purchasing assistance
Use an option shown within Taobao when your payment, product, destination, warehouse process, and delivery route are supported and you are comfortable with the available packing choices.
Use independent forwarding when you can place and pay for the Taobao order yourself but need a China warehouse address, parcel records, storage, consolidation, or more route choices. Questions to ask before authorizing shipment
- What are the final actual weight and carton dimensions?
- Which formula, divisor, rounding rule, and minimum charge apply?
- Which charges are included, excluded, or payable at destination?
- When does the estimated transit window begin?
- Which carrier handles final delivery, and is the postcode remote?
- Are all products accepted on this route?
- What tracking and compensation terms apply?
- Would consolidation, repacking, or splitting change the chargeable weight?
