Fast sea shipping can give US buyers a useful middle option between ordinary air freight and conventional ocean freight. See when it works for 10 kg+ shipments, how the weekly sailing timeline is counted, and what to check before paying.
If you are shipping 10 kg or more of ordinary goods from China to the United States and the delivery is not urgent, fast sea shipping may be the most useful option to compare with ordinary air freight. On current qualifying routes, the fast-sea freight quote can be around 50% lower than the ordinary air quote for the same packed shipment, while taking longer. The exact saving is not fixed: it depends on the final packed weight, volume, goods, US ZIP code, service scope and the rate available when you book.
This article is not another general list of China-to-US transit times. The broader China-to-US delivery-time guide compares express, air, parcel and conventional sea freight. Here, the decision is narrower: should a small wholesaler or household buyer wait for a weekly fast-sea sailing to reduce the international freight bill?
The short answer: choose fast sea when the saving matters more than one extra week
Ordinary door-to-door air shipping on the current route is commonly planned at about 7–10 days after dispatch. Fast sea shipping has a weekly departure cycle. If payment, cargo and shipment information are ready on Thursday, the planned vessel departure is the following Thursday. After the vessel sails, the current route estimate is approximately 14 days to delivery.
That means you should not read “14 days” as 14 days from payment. In the example above, the working plan is:
- This Thursday: payment and shipping approval are completed.
- Next Thursday: planned vessel departure, provided the cargo met the warehouse and documentation cutoff.
- About 14 days after departure: estimated delivery to the US address.
Under normal conditions, that is roughly three weeks from payment to delivery. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date. Warehouse problems, a missed cutoff, vessel changes, port handling, customs review, weather or last-mile appointments can extend the timeline.
Who usually gets the most value from this route?
Fast sea shipping is worth pricing when your shipment is large enough for the difference in rate to matter but still too small for a traditional freight project.
It can suit:
- a small wholesaler restocking clothing, shoes, stationery or other ordinary dry goods;
- an online seller combining several supplier cartons into one shipment;
- a household buying kitchen tools, storage products, home décor or mixed daily-use items;
- a family consolidating several non-urgent purchases at a China warehouse;
- a buyer who can accept a planned three-week timeline in exchange for a lower freight bill.
The 10 kg threshold is a practical starting point, not an automatic approval rule. A dense 12 kg carton and a light but oversized 12 kg carton can receive very different quotes. The warehouse must confirm final dimensions as well as scale weight. If purchases are arriving from several sellers, use the package-consolidation guide to decide whether to wait, combine or repack them before requesting the final comparison.
Compare the same service scope—not just two price numbers
A cheap quote is not useful if it ends at a port while the air quote includes customs handling and home delivery. Before deciding that fast sea is half the price, compare both quotes against the same packed shipment and ask what each one includes.
Check these items in writing:
- final packed weight and carton dimensions;
- chargeable weight or volume rule;
- US destination ZIP code;
- residential, commercial or appointment delivery;
- customs brokerage and importer arrangement;
- duties, taxes and government fees;
- destination handling, inspection, storage or redelivery charges;
- the event that starts the transit estimate;
- what happens if the weekly cutoff is missed.
If the quote uses DDP or DAP language, read the separate DDP versus DAP guide for small US importers. A transport label does not by itself tell you who is the importer of record, who pays duties or who responds if US Customs asks for more information.
The Thursday cutoff only works when the cargo is actually ready
Paying on Thursday does not reserve a clean departure if one supplier carton is still on the road, the goods have not been checked, or the description is too vague for shipping documents. Before approving the route, provide:
- an item-by-item English product description;
- material, function and intended use;
- quantity and unit value;
- country of origin;
- supplier or manufacturer information when requested;
- battery, liquid, powder, magnetic or branded-goods details;
- recipient name, phone number and complete US delivery address;
- whether the shipment is for personal use or resale.
US Customs and Border Protection states that ocean cargo information for the Importer Security Filing (ISF, also called 10+2) must generally be submitted before the goods are loaded on a vessel bound for the United States. The importer or its agent normally handles the electronic filing, but the customer still needs to provide accurate shipment facts before the cutoff. See CBP’s ISF timing guidance.
CBP also rejects generic cargo descriptions such as “gift,” “parts,” “general cargo” or “miscellaneous.” Use plain, specific wording such as “stainless-steel kitchen racks” or “men’s cotton socks.” CBP publishes examples of acceptable cargo descriptions.
Ordinary goods are the safest fit
Do not assume that every product accepted for domestic delivery in China can use this line. Batteries, liquids, powders, food, medicine, cosmetics, plants, animal products, weapons, counterfeit goods and some wireless or regulated products may require additional documents, a different route or may be refused.
CBP explains that some products are prohibited and others require licenses or permits from the relevant US agency. Check the current CBP prohibited and restricted items guidance before buying or dispatching uncertain goods. YDA Express can check the available carrier route against the product information supplied, but it cannot replace CBP, a licensed customs broker or the agency that regulates the product.
Do not use the old “under $800 is duty-free” assumption
The transport choice does not remove import obligations. CBP states that duty-free de minimis treatment for shipments valued at or below $800 was suspended for goods from all countries effective August 29, 2025. Duties, taxes and fees may therefore apply at any value, depending on the product, origin, entry method and current rules. See the current CBP low-value shipment guidance.
Ask whether the APP quote is freight only, DAP or a confirmed door-to-door service with a written import-cost scope. Do not lower the declared value or describe commercial goods as personal effects to obtain a cheaper quote.
When ordinary air shipping is still the better choice
Choose or keep the air option when:
- you have a launch date, customer promise or travel deadline that cannot absorb the weekly wait;
- missing one sailing would create a serious stock problem;
- the goods are small, valuable and the sea saving is minor in absolute dollars;
- the product needs a route that the fast-sea service cannot accept;
- the importer, customs broker or final-delivery arrangement is not clear;
- you need a simpler timeline and are willing to pay more for speed.
Fast sea is not “better air freight.” It is a different trade-off: lower current freight cost in exchange for a weekly cutoff and a longer planning window.
How to check the current price in the YDA Express App
Rates can change with capacity, fuel, season, packed dimensions and destination. Use the YDA Express App to enter or confirm the destination country, ZIP code, product type, packed weight and dimensions. If the shipment includes several parcels, wait for the consolidation and final measurement before treating the estimate as final.
Compare the fast-sea and ordinary-air options shown for the same cargo. If the sea price is close to half the air price and you can accept roughly three weeks from payment under the current schedule, the saving can be substantial. If the APP does not show a suitable line, send the product list and package details for a manual route check rather than assuming the goods qualify.
YDA Express can assist with purchasing, China warehouse receiving, agreed photo checks, consolidation, repacking and international route comparison. Final acceptance, sailing availability, import treatment and delivery time must be confirmed for the actual goods and destination before dispatch.
