Xianyu (闲鱼) is one of China’s largest second-hand marketplaces. It is useful for discontinued electronics, collectibles, vintage clothing, spare parts and other items that may be difficult to find locally. The challenge for an overseas buyer is not finding a listing—it is completing a domestic transaction safely and moving the parcel out of China.

The short answer
Most overseas shoppers use one of three routes:
- Buy directly if they already have a supported payment method and a mainland China delivery address.
- Use a forwarding warehouse if they can pay the seller themselves and only need domestic receiving and international shipping.
- Use a purchasing service if they need help communicating with the seller, paying, receiving, checking and forwarding the item.
For used goods, a purchasing service with a clearly defined inspection request is usually the most manageable option. It does not remove all risk: a visual warehouse check is not the same as professional authentication, repair diagnosis or long-term functional testing.
Why overseas purchases are different
Xianyu is designed mainly for domestic transactions. Sellers commonly expect Chinese-language communication, local payment and delivery to an address in mainland China. Many listings are single used items sold by individuals rather than standardized stock sold by a retailer.
That changes the risk profile:
- The description may be brief or subjective.
- Photos may not show every defect.
- Accessories, size, serial number or repair history may be unclear.
- A seller may not accept returns unless the item materially differs from the listing.
- The practical dispute window can become difficult once the parcel leaves China.
- Some goods cannot be shipped internationally or require a restricted route.
Before buying, separate two questions: Can the item be purchased? and Can it legally and safely be shipped to your destination?
Choose the right buying route
Direct purchase
Direct purchase can work when you can complete payment and provide a mainland China address. You or a trusted contact must then receive the parcel, inspect it, raise any dispute promptly and arrange international shipping.
This route offers the most control but also requires the most coordination. Confirm current payment eligibility inside the platform rather than relying on old online guides, because account and payment requirements can change.
Forwarding only
A forwarding warehouse receives a parcel in China and ships it overseas. This is suitable when you can pay the seller yourself.

Basic receiving may only record that a parcel arrived. Photos, measurements, repacking, consolidation or a functional check may be separate services. Never assume a forwarder verifies authenticity or product condition.
Purchasing assistance
A purchasing service can communicate with the seller, confirm selected details, pay domestically, receive the parcel and arrange onward shipping. It is useful when language, payment or seller coordination is the obstacle.
Before paying the service, request a written cost breakdown covering the item price, domestic delivery, service and inspection charges, storage or consolidation, international freight and possible destination taxes. Also confirm what happens if the seller cancels, sends the wrong item or rejects a return.
A safer step-by-step workflow
1. Save the complete listing evidence
Copy the listing link and take screenshots of the title, description, price, photos, seller statements and any promised accessories. A listing can be edited or removed later.
2. Define your questions before anyone contacts the seller
Make the questions product-specific. Examples include:
- Is this the exact item shown in the photos?
- Are there cracks, stains, odors, corrosion or repairs?
- What accessories are included?
- Can the seller provide current photos with a simple requested detail?
- For electronics, does it power on and are the main controls responsive?
- For clothing, what are the actual measurements rather than the label size?
- Is a return accepted if the received item materially differs from the description?
Avoid vague requests such as “check everything.” A warehouse can only perform checks that are practical, safe and agreed in advance.
3. Check seller and listing signals together
Review transaction history, feedback, listing consistency and the seller’s responses. No single score proves that a seller or item is genuine. Be cautious when the price is far below comparable listings, photos appear copied, the seller refuses new photos, or payment is requested outside the platform.
4. Confirm shipping eligibility before purchase
Batteries, liquids, powders, magnets, pressurized products, oversized goods and some branded or used items may face carrier or customs restrictions. Provide the exact product, material, battery specification, quantity and destination to the shipping provider for a route check.
A successful domestic purchase does not guarantee that an international route is available.
5. Approve the complete cost, not only the listing price
Estimate the landed cost:
item price + domestic delivery + service/inspection fees + repacking or storage + international freight + destination taxes and clearance charges
International freight normally depends on chargeable weight, parcel dimensions, route and product type. Obtain a current quote after the warehouse has the packed measurements; fixed examples from old articles are rarely reliable.
6. Purchase through the agreed process
Keep payment and seller communication on the platform whenever possible. If using a purchasing service, confirm the service’s refund method and exchange-rate policy before funding the order.
7. Inspect immediately after warehouse receipt
Ask the warehouse to compare the parcel with your saved evidence. A practical inspection may include:
- photos of all sides and visible defects;
- model, color, quantity and included accessories;
- serial or identifying details where appropriate;
- basic power-on evidence for eligible electronics;
- garment measurements;
- parcel weight and dimensions.
Inspection has limits. Photos cannot prove authenticity, hidden damage, battery health or long-term performance. High-value watches, luxury goods, trading cards and specialist electronics may require an independent expert. Decide this before purchase, not after international dispatch.
8. Resolve problems before confirming or forwarding
Review inspection evidence promptly. If the item is wrong or materially misrepresented, ask the buyer in China to use the available platform process while evidence and timing still support a claim. Do not authorize international shipping until you accept the condition.
Returns are never guaranteed. Seller terms, platform rules, timing and evidence all matter.
9. Choose packaging and international transport
For fragile or valuable used goods, request suitable cushioning, moisture protection and, where available, additional insurance. Consolidation can reduce the number of parcels, but it may also increase parcel value and size. Compare the packed options rather than assuming one box is always cheaper.
Describe and value goods accurately for customs. Import rules, taxes and prohibited-item policies vary by destination and change over time. Check the destination customs authority or ask the carrier before dispatch. Counterfeit goods may be seized; an agent’s visual check is not a legal authenticity guarantee.
Product-specific checks
Electronics and cameras
Ask for the model and serial details, visible screen or lens condition, battery compartment, ports and a basic power-on video when practical. Confirm whether batteries can travel on the selected route. A power-on check does not prove every function works.
Clothing and footwear
Request actual measurements, close-ups of wear areas, soles, labels, stains and repairs. Used sizing can differ from the label because of shrinkage or alteration.
Collectibles and branded goods
Request detailed, current photos and provenance documents if available. For high-value purchases, use a qualified authentication service. Avoid any seller or intermediary promising certainty from a few photos.

- Buying before confirming international shipping eligibility.
- Treating seller ratings as a guarantee.
- Asking for “inspection” without defining the checks.
- Comparing only the listing price and ignoring landed cost.
