Buying Branded Goods from Pinduoduo to Italy: A Counterfeit-Risk Check
A very low Pinduoduo price can create a strong urge to buy. For an Italian buyer, however, the useful question is not only “Can an agent order this?” It is “Can I identify this product, explain its value and accept the authenticity and customs risk before paying?”
This guide produces a buy, hold, replace or skip decision. It is for personal shoppers considering branded-looking fashion, accessories and everyday goods. It does not authenticate products or help move counterfeits.
Why the Italian buyer must decide before payment
Italy's Customs and Monopolies Agency warns that online purchases from outside the EU can involve customs duty, VAT, excise where relevant and carrier clearance charges. It also states that a final buyer who purchases goods whose quality, seller conditions or price suggest breaches of origin or industrial-property rules may face an administrative fine of €100 to €7,000, with confiscation of the goods. The practical lesson is simple: a blurred logo, implausible discount or seller promise such as “same factory” is not harmless marketing. If the product cannot pass a reasonable pre-purchase check, the low price is not a saving.
Step 1: identify what the listing is really selling
Capture the listing before it changes. Record:
- complete seller name and product link;
- exact product name, model, material and size;
- every visible brand name, logo, pattern or character;
- whether the seller claims “original,” “authorised,” “factory surplus,” “inspired” or something else;
- price, discount and number of units;
- available invoice, authorisation or supply-chain evidence;
- return deadline and who pays China domestic return freight.
Do not replace a risky branded description with “bag,” “watch” or “accessory.” Customs treatment depends on the actual goods, not a convenient declaration.
Step 2: use a price-and-evidence test
Price alone does not prove that an item is counterfeit, but it is a warning signal when combined with weak seller identity, copied photos or missing product details. Ask:
- Is the price commercially plausible for the claimed product?
- Does the seller show its own detailed photos rather than promotional images only?
- Can the seller provide a consistent model, material and packaging description?
- Is there evidence supporting any claim of authorisation or authenticity?
- Would you still buy if the logo were removed and only product quality remained?
If the answer to questions 3 and 4 is no, do not assume a warehouse photo will solve the problem later.
Step 3: plan a warehouse photo request
For an item that passes the initial screen, request photos that answer specific questions:
- full front, back and sides;
- label, tag, model and material information;
- close-up of stitching, fasteners and visible marks;
- packaging, accessories and serial information where applicable;
- measured dimensions and visible quantity;
- any damage, color difference or mismatch with the ordered SKU.

Add Italian import cost before deciding
VAT applies to commercial goods imported into Italy. The IOSS system can simplify VAT collection for qualifying distance sales in consignments not exceeding €150, but the buyer should verify whether the actual transaction and declaration use it correctly.
From 1 July 2026, Italy applies the EU temporary €3 customs duty per item type to qualifying distance-sale goods in consignments up to €150. It is based on tariff classification, not simply the number of physical units: five identical T-shirts can represent one item type, while a T-shirt and a watch can represent two. Your pre-payment estimate should include:
- product price and China domestic freight;
- purchasing or payment service charges;
- repacked international chargeable weight;
- VAT and applicable customs duty;
- carrier customs-presentation or clearance fees;
- a return-risk allowance when seller evidence is weak.

Example: logo bag or unbranded alternative
Suppose a seller offers a logo-bearing bag at a price far below the normal market, provides only catalogue photos and refuses to explain its source. A second seller offers an unbranded leather-look bag with dimensions, material, real photos and a clear return policy.
The first item belongs in skip, even if the warehouse can physically receive it. The second can move to buy or hold for material confirmation. The decision protects the buyer while preserving the original shopping goal: obtaining a useful bag at a reasonable total cost.
