Buying a Used Phone on Xianyu: Inspection Checklist Before International Shipping

Buying a used phone on Xianyu from overseas requires more than checking the price and seller rating. Use this checklist to verify the exact model, account-lock status, visible condition, battery information, repairs, accessories and shipping eligibility before the phone leaves China.

Buying a Used Phone on Xianyu: Inspection Checklist Before International Shipping

The safest time to identify a problem with a used Xianyu phone is before payment or while the device is still in China. Confirm the exact model and region, ask the seller to remove all account locks, define the checks you need, and do not authorise international shipping until you have reviewed the warehouse evidence.

A warehouse photo can confirm visible details. It cannot guarantee authenticity, battery life, water resistance, network compatibility or long-term performance. Treat the warehouse as a decision point, not as a substitute for a technician.

If you are new to the platform, first read how to buy from Xianyu overseas. The checklist below starts where that general buying guide becomes product-specific.

Before paying: identify the exact phone

Do not buy from a title such as “iPhone 15” or “Samsung phone” alone. Ask the seller to confirm:

  • manufacturer, full model number and regional version;
  • storage capacity, colour and physical condition;
  • whether the phone is carrier-locked;
  • physical SIM and eSIM support;
  • included charger, cable, box and other accessories;
  • repair and parts-replacement history;
  • whether the screen, frame, camera glass or back has been replaced;
  • whether the device has had liquid exposure, overheating or battery swelling; and
  • whether the seller can remove the device from every personal or organisation account before handover.

Regional versions can differ in network bands, SIM configuration, software features and warranty support. Check compatibility with your destination carrier using the full model number—not only the marketing name.

Save the listing, selected variation, seller statements and promised accessories. A listing can later be edited or removed.

Ask for current evidence, not only listing photos

Request a short, current set of photos or video that answers specific questions. Useful evidence may include:

  1. the phone powering on;
  2. the model and storage page in Settings;
  3. the battery-health page when the operating system provides one;
  4. the screen displaying a plain light and dark background;
  5. front and rear cameras opening;
  6. the charging port and exterior buttons;
  7. close-ups of the frame, screen, rear glass and camera lenses; and
  8. the accessories laid out together.

Do not ask the seller to expose passwords, account credentials or personal content. Device identifiers should be handled within the transaction process rather than posted publicly.

Fresh evidence reduces uncertainty but does not prove that every function works. A video can miss intermittent faults, poor battery endurance, weak signal reception or damage that appears only under load.

Account locks can make a working phone unusable

For an iPhone, the seller should erase the device and remove it from the previous owner’s Apple Account. Apple advises buyers not to take ownership of a used iPhone or iPad protected by Activation Lock. During setup, a request for the previous owner’s Apple Account means the device is still linked.

For an Android phone, the seller should remove Google accounts before performing the factory reset. Google explains that Factory Reset Protection can require a previously synced Google Account or screen lock after a protected device is reset.

Also ask whether the phone belongs to a company, school, instalment plan or device-management programme. A normal home screen does not rule out an account, finance or management restriction.

The practical acceptance condition is simple: the phone should be erased, ready for a new owner to set up, and not asking for the seller’s account credentials. If the warehouse cannot safely verify that state, keep the parcel in China and ask the seller to resolve it.

Define the warehouse inspection before the parcel arrives

“Please inspect the phone” is too vague. Send a written checklist and ask which checks are available, safe and chargeable. A practical receiving check may include:

  • matching the visible model, colour and storage information to the order;
  • photographing all sides, screen, camera lenses, frame and ports;
  • confirming the visible quantity and accessories;
  • recording whether the device powers on;
  • showing the account-lock or setup screen;
  • photographing visible battery-health information when available;
  • checking for obvious cracks, deformation, corrosion or swelling; and
  • recording the parcel weight and received packaging.

The China warehouse parcel receiving guide explains why receiving and inspection instructions should be specific. Do not assume that basic parcel receipt includes functional testing, authentication, disassembly or professional diagnosis.

What a basic inspection cannot prove

A visual or short power-on check normally cannot confirm:

  • remaining real-world battery endurance;
  • complete camera, microphone, speaker, biometric or sensor performance;
  • cellular reception on your destination network;
  • hidden liquid damage or internal corrosion;
  • whether every replacement part is original;
  • long-term stability under charging or heavy use;
  • legal ownership in every database; or
  • future warranty or local repair eligibility.

High-value devices may justify an independent technician or manufacturer-authorised check in China. Ask who will perform it, what will be tested, what evidence will be supplied and what happens if the seller refuses a return.

Check the battery before arranging international shipping

A phone with a built-in lithium-ion battery may require an eligible carrier service, correct packaging and accurate product information. Route acceptance depends on the device, battery condition, destination and current carrier rules.

Do not dispatch a phone with a swollen, leaking, recalled, overheating or otherwise damaged battery. IATA guidance states that lithium batteries identified as defective for safety reasons, or damaged batteries capable of producing dangerous heat, fire or short circuit, are forbidden for air transport.

Before buying, provide the forwarder with the exact device, battery condition, quantity and destination. A seller’s ability to ship the phone to a domestic warehouse does not prove that an international route is available.

If the phone does not match the listing

Stop the parcel before consolidation, repacking or export. Keep the seller packaging and assemble a small evidence set:

  • listing screenshots and selected specification;
  • order and domestic tracking references;
  • full-item photos;
  • close-ups of the mismatch or defect;
  • the requested test result; and
  • one sentence stating what was promised and what arrived.

Then ask the buyer or purchasing agent in China to check the available return, refund or replacement process. The guide to wrong items or missing parts at a China warehouse explains how to hold the parcel and compare the available remedies.

Returns are not guaranteed. Seller terms, evidence, platform rules and timing matter. Once the phone leaves China, an international return can become slower and more expensive.

Final approval checklist

Do not release the phone for international shipping until you can answer yes to the relevant items:

  • The full model number, region, storage and colour match the order.
  • Carrier lock and destination-network compatibility have been checked.
  • Apple Activation Lock or Android account protection has been removed.
  • Repair history and replaced parts have been disclosed as far as possible.
  • Screen, frame, ports, cameras and accessories have been documented.
  • Available battery information has been reviewed.
  • There is no visible swelling, overheating damage or severe deformation.
  • The chosen route accepts the device and its battery.
  • The customs description and actual value will be declared accurately.
  • Any mismatch has been resolved before consolidation or export.

YDA Express can assist with seller communication, purchasing, China warehouse receipt, agreed photo or video checks, parcel holding, packing and available international shipping options. The exact inspection scope and transport route depend on the device and destination. Send the Xianyu link, full model, quantity, destination country and your required checks before payment.
