YDA Express can review ordinary kitchen and work knives, plus some legally eligible controlled knives, for designated routes from China to Japan. This guide explains pre-shipment checks, permits, packing, declarations and the limits customers must confirm before dispatch.

Can You Ship Kitchen and Controlled Knives to Japan from China?

Short answer: yes, some knives can be shipped from China to Japan—but acceptance is item-specific, not automatic.

YDA Express can review ordinary kitchen knives, household knives, work knives and some controlled knives for transport through approved routes. A controlled item can move only after its exact specifications, intended use, destination legality, required permits and carrier acceptance have been confirmed in writing. A route quotation is not a customs-clearance guarantee.

This distinction matters. A stainless-steel chef's knife for home cooking is not assessed in the same way as a dagger, switch knife, sword or weapon-style product. Japan Customs states that firearms and swords subject to Japan's Firearms and Swords Possession Control Law require supporting permission, and imports of regulated firearms or swords may also require approval from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

YDA shipping rule: do not purchase or send any knife to the warehouse until YDA Express has reviewed the product and confirmed a route in writing.

Quick decision table

Product type Can YDA review it? Typical result
Ordinary chef's knife, cleaver or table knife Yes Often eligible after product and route review
Household scissors or fixed-blade work tool Yes Case-by-case review based on design and use
Manual folding utility knife Yes Detailed mechanism and dimensions required
Dagger, switch knife, sword or other legally controlled knife Yes Only selected items, designated routes and required permits
Concealed, disguised or knuckle-style weapon Review required Often rejected if prohibited or unsupported
Undisclosed knife or falsely described item No Shipment refused

This table is a screening guide, not a legal classification. Japan's authorities—not the seller, buyer or forwarder—make the final determination.

Why “knife” is not a sufficient product description

Online listings often use broad labels such as “outdoor tool,” “cooking accessory” or “collectible.” Customs and carriers look at the physical product instead. The blade, point, edge, mechanism, handle and intended use can change how an item is treated.

Japan Customs' import-related laws list identifies regulated categories that include certain swords, daggers and switch knives. Some thresholds are expressed by blade length, but blade length alone does not decide every case. A short product may still be controlled because of its construction, while an ordinary cooking knife may fall outside the sword categories but still require carrier approval and accurate declaration.

Before YDA Express can answer “can this ship?”, send:

  1. The product link and seller's full description.
  2. Clear photos of both sides of the knife.
  3. A photo with a ruler showing blade length and total length.
  4. Whether the blade is single-edged or double-edged.
  5. Whether it is fixed, manually folding, spring-assisted or automatic.
  6. Whether it locks when opened.
  7. Material, intended use, quantity and unit value.
  8. The complete Japanese delivery postcode.
  9. The receiver's name and whether the importer is an individual or business.
  10. Any permit, approval or official classification already obtained.

If the product received at the warehouse differs from the submitted photos or specifications, the approval becomes invalid and the shipment must be reviewed again.

Japan's legal boundary: ordinary knives and controlled swords are not the same

Japan Customs explains that possession of firearms, crossbows and swords is restricted under the Firearms and Swords Possession Control Law. For an item covered as a sword, Customs may require an original Permit for the Possession of Swords issued by the relevant Prefectural Public Safety Commission. Antique or art swords may involve a registration certificate. Regulated firearms or swords may also require import approval from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

For this reason, YDA Express does not treat every sharp product as general cargo. We first separate the shipment into one of three operational outcomes:

1. Ordinary item—route approval possible

A normal kitchen knife or household cutting tool may be eligible after product review, safe packing and confirmation that the selected carrier accepts it. The receiver must still comply with Japanese law and customs requirements.

2. Controlled item—conditional route only

Some controlled knives may be accepted through a designated route when the product is legally importable, the receiver has all required Japanese permissions, the carrier has approved the exact item and YDA Express has issued written pre-shipment acceptance.

“Conditional” means documents must be checked before dispatch. It does not mean a customer can send the item first and apply later.

3. Prohibited, unsupported or undocumented item—no shipment

YDA Express will not dispatch a knife when the destination prohibits it, the permit cannot be produced, the carrier refuses it, the product is concealed or misdescribed, or its actual specifications do not match the review file.

A practical pre-shipment workflow

Step 1: review before buying

Send YDA Express the listing, photos and specifications. If the seller cannot provide the mechanism or dimensions, pause the purchase. A vague product page is a compliance risk.

Step 2: determine the Japanese importer

The receiver should contact the relevant Japanese authority when the item may fall under the Firearms and Swords Possession Control Law. Depending on the item, that may include the Prefectural Public Safety Commission, Customs or METI. YDA Express can review shipping feasibility, but cannot replace the importer's legal permission.

Step 3: obtain written route confirmation

Approval must identify the product, quantity and destination. Do not assume approval for one chef's knife covers a sword, an automatic knife or a commercial batch.

Step 4: warehouse inspection

When the product arrives in China, the warehouse can compare it with the submitted photos, verify quantity and check whether safe repacking is needed. Any mismatch triggers a new review.

Step 5: compliant packing and declaration

The blade must be covered and immobilized. The declaration must state the real product, use, material, quantity and value. Supporting documents travel with the shipment when required.

Step 6: customs review in Japan

Japanese Customs and other competent authorities make the final release decision. Inspection, document requests, tax assessment, return or seizure can occur even after carrier acceptance.

How to pack a knife safely

Safe packing protects warehouse staff, carrier personnel, customs officers and the receiver.

  • Fit a blade guard or rigid sheath over the entire cutting edge and tip.
  • Secure the guard so it cannot slide off in transit.
  • Immobilize the knife inside a rigid inner box.
  • Use sufficient cushioning so the handle and tip cannot pierce the carton.
  • Pack multiple knives in separate protected compartments.
  • Place the inner box in a strong outer carton with no loose movement.
  • Keep permits and product records accessible; do not hide them inside decorative packaging.

A seller's thin retail box is normally not enough for international transport.

How to declare the shipment

Descriptions should be specific and consistent with the invoice, product page and permit.

Good examples:

  • “Stainless-steel chef's knife, fixed blade, household cooking use”
  • “Manual folding utility knife, non-automatic, work use”
  • “Collectible sword, specifications as stated in attached Japanese import approval”

Do not use vague or misleading descriptions such as “gift,” “sample,” “kitchenware,” “metal accessory” or “tool” to conceal the nature of the item. Do not understate the value. Japan Customs requires the import declaration to identify the goods, quantity and price, and may inspect whether the declaration matches the actual shipment.

What YDA Express can do

YDA Express can:

  • screen product photos and specifications before purchase;
  • identify whether a general or designated route may be available;
  • check carrier acceptance for the disclosed item;
  • receive, inspect, consolidate and safely repack approved goods;
  • prepare a truthful itemized shipping declaration;
  • keep the reviewed product and route information together.

YDA Express cannot:

  • declare that an illegal item has become legal because a shipping route exists;
  • guarantee Japanese Customs clearance;
  • obtain a possession or import permit unless separately agreed in writing;
  • accept a knife that was not disclosed during review;
  • replace the receiver's responsibility to comply with Japanese law;
  • promise the same route will remain available for future items.

Routes, carrier rules and authority decisions can change. Every knife shipment needs a fresh confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Can YDA Express ship a kitchen knife from China to Japan?

Often yes, after the exact product and destination have been reviewed. Ordinary kitchen knives are generally handled differently from controlled swords or weapon-style knives, but carrier acceptance and accurate declaration are still required.

Can YDA Express ship a controlled knife to Japan?

Some legally eligible controlled knives may be considered for a designated route, but only after specification review, Japanese permit confirmation where required, carrier approval and written acceptance from YDA Express.

Can I ship a sword or switch knife as “kitchenware”?

No. Misdescription can lead to rejection, customs detention, return, seizure or penalties. The declaration must match the actual product and any permit.

Does a short blade automatically mean it is unrestricted?

No. Dimensions are important, but construction, mechanism and legal category also matter. Submit the complete specifications for review.

Can I send several knives for resale?

Commercial quantities need an importer and documentation review. Quantity, value, intended use and any business-import requirements must be checked before purchase.

Does YDA Express guarantee delivery after approval?

No. Pre-approval confirms that YDA Express has an operational route for the disclosed item at that time. Japanese Customs and other authorities retain final control over import clearance.

Request a knife-shipping review before purchase

To receive a useful answer, send YDA Express the product URL, clear photos, blade and total length, edge type, opening mechanism, use, quantity, value, Japanese postcode and any permits. We will reply with one of three results: ordinary-route approval, conditional designated-route approval, or rejection.
