Before sending children's clothes from Taobao to Ireland, keep the exact listing, size information and actual labels together. Check what supports 0% VAT treatment and which other charges remain separate.
Some children's clothes bought on Taobao can qualify for Ireland's 0% VAT rate on import. A seller's “kids” category, your child's age or a Chinese size number does not establish that on its own. Keep the product description, size information and the actual garment's labels together, so the business handling the Irish import can assess the specific item.
This is for personal purchases of ordinary new clothing sent to the Republic of Ireland. It explains what to check and preserve; it does not promise a tax rate or cover Northern Ireland, commercial stock or specialist protective clothing. Battery-heated garments or unusual animal materials need separate import and route checks before purchase; a VAT assessment does not establish product safety or permission to transport them.
What makes this a children's-clothing VAT question?
Revenue's clothing guidance allows zero rating for certain clothing for children under 11. It also expressly covers importation, so this is not only a rule for buying in Irish shops.
The detailed clothing manual looks at children's design and age or size information in the description, labelling or marketing. It lists upper sizes of 32-inch chest, 26-inch waist and 152cm height. Adult XS is not automatically children's clothing. Accessories and fur-containing garments need their own check; footwear has separate Revenue guidance.
Use those conditions to decide what evidence is missing, rather than treating a size label as a tax certificate. If the listing is vague or contradicts the sewn-in label, ask for an explanation before relying on zero rating.
A Taobao size “150” does not answer the whole question
Ask the seller what its size code actually means. Is the chart based on the child's height and body measurements, or on the finished garment laid flat? Does a displayed chest measurement mean the full circumference or the width across one side?
Do not compare a flat garment width directly with Revenue's chest limit. Equally, do not assume that “150” proves compliance or that “160” has a particular legal meaning. Keep the chart's units and measuring instructions. If the numbers need interpreting, send the original information to the carrier or customs representative that will handle the declaration.

Keep a record for the exact variant you buy
Create one short record for each style and size, rather than saving only the shop's homepage:
- The listing, seller and selected colour/size, captured while that variant is available.
- The description showing whether it is designed and marketed for children.
- The complete size chart, its units and the seller's explanation of the measurements.
- The material description, quantity, order price and proof of payment.
- The domestic parcel reference and, after arrival, photos of the actual item and its labels.
Keep the seller's reply beside the screenshot it explains. An order confirmation saying “blue, 150” is difficult to interpret once the original product page has disappeared. Record any substitution separately; evidence for one variant does not automatically describe another.
Request photographs that resolve the uncertainty
When ordering yourself, copy the warehouse address and your warehouse ID from the YDA Express App into the shopping platform's delivery details. Keep the ID intact so arrivals and their photographs can be assigned to your account.
Before arrival, tell the warehouse which information matters. For a garment, that may be the attached age/size tag, the sewn-in size and material label, and a view showing which item those labels belong to. Ask about an agreed measurement check if a specific measurement is still unclear. Do not assume every parcel includes detailed measurements or specialist inspection.

Keep the remaining charges in the budget
Zero VAT on a qualifying garment does not mean a free international parcel. Freight, applicable customs duty, the Union Handling Fee and carrier charges are separate questions. Other products in the same carton may have a different VAT treatment.
Revenue's current online-purchase rules describe a €3 duty for each distinct product type in most consumer e-commerce consignments with an intrinsic value of €150 or less. Above that value, the ordinary goods-specific duty rules apply. Separately, a Union Handling Fee introduced on 1 November 2026 may be passed on to the buyer. Confirm the actual route's charges, including any VAT on fees; do not read a garment's 0% rate as a waiver of those costs.
If standard-rate clothing is included, Ireland's current standard VAT rate is 23%. The import VAT calculation starts from customs value and can add relevant duties and applicable further transport costs. Ask for the actual calculation, without counting the same freight twice, rather than multiplying only the Taobao item price. Accurate descriptions and separate item values still matter in a mixed parcel.
Get an answer about this item before dispatch
Send the product record to the actual carrier or customs representative and ask: “Is this information sufficient to assess children's-clothing VAT treatment? If not, which description, label or measurement is missing, and how should it be supplied for the declaration?”
If the answer remains uncertain, budget conservatively or pause that item. Do not ask the seller to relabel adult clothing as children's clothing.
