Taobao Clothing to Ireland: Size, Returns and Landed Cost Before You Buy

Taobao clothing becomes expensive when a sizing guess survives all the way to Ireland. The better workflow is to place three gates between the listing and international dispatch: fit evidence before payment, a keep-or-return decision in China, and a final landed-cost check for Ireland.

This guide is for personal clothing and footwear purchases. It does not assume that a seller's size label matches an Irish or EU size, that a warehouse can judge fit, or that every return is free. Irish customs and consumer information was checked on 27 September 2026.

Gate 1: turn a size label into measurements

Do not order solely from S, M, L or a familiar shoe number. The same label can represent different garment measurements across sellers, and a chart may describe the body, the finished garment or an unstated measuring method.

Before purchase, save the listing and confirm:

whether the chart is in centimetres;
whether measurements refer to the body or the garment;
the points used for chest, waist, hips, shoulder, sleeve and total length;
whether there is a stated manual-measurement tolerance;
fabric composition and whether it stretches;
the chosen colour and variant;
whether a coat needs room for layers;
for shoes, whether the number means foot length, insole length or a regional size.

Measure a garment you already own and like. Lay it flat without stretching, record the same points used by the seller, then compare measurements—not just labels. For footwear, measure both feet and use the larger measurement.

If a listing does not provide enough information, ask the seller before authorising the order. Purchasing assistance can help communicate a specific question, but neither an agent nor a warehouse can promise that a garment will fit your body.

Create an evidence request before the return clock starts

Write the warehouse check request while the listing is still open. Ask only for things that can be observed:

photograph the visible size, colour and care labels;
show the front and back of the garment;
confirm the quantity and any advertised removable accessory;
photograph an obvious stain, tear, open seam or broken fastening;
keep hangtags, hygiene seals and seller packaging intact;
if the service is agreed, measure one or two clearly defined points while the garment is laid flat.

A basic photo check cannot assess comfort, drape, warmth, exact fibre quality, waterproof performance, authenticity or long-term durability. Avoid vague instructions such as “check the quality”. Specify the evidence that would make you keep or return the item.

Gate 2: keep, exchange or return while the item is in China

The lowest-friction return usually happens before international dispatch. When the parcel arrives, compare the warehouse evidence with the saved order immediately. A wrong label, wrong colour, missing part or visible defect is different from uncertainty about personal fit.

Use this decision path:

Clear mismatch: hold the item, preserve packaging and request the seller's return or replacement options.
Measurement concern: compare the agreed flat measurement with the listing and your reference garment. Remember that measuring method and tolerance can differ.
Minor defect: compare a partial refund with the value and usefulness of the garment.
No reliable evidence: do not consolidate merely to keep other parcels moving; ask what additional observable check is possible.

The Taobao return and refund cost guide explains why the seller's “full refund” may not cover domestic return postage, agent handling, completed checks, payment conversion or international freight. Confirm the return deadline shown for the actual order, the evidence required, who pays Chinese domestic postage and where the refund will be credited.

Ireland's Competition and Consumer Protection Commission warns that buying from a business outside the EU can provide fewer practical protections than buying from an EU, Icelandic or Norwegian business. Check the seller's identity and terms; a euro price or .ie address does not prove EU establishment.

Protect the rest of the order

One disputed jacket should not force every other parcel to wait or be exported. Keep the disputed item separate. Decide whether the remaining clothes are ready for packing, whether a replacement can arrive within your schedule, and whether domestic return work is worth the likely refund.

Gate 3: approve the parcel, not just the clothes

Once the keep-or-return decisions are closed, review how the garments will be packed. Clothing can compress, but shoes, hats, gift boxes and structured coats may lose protection if packaging is removed too aggressively.

Ask for:

which parcels and garments are included;
what seller packaging will be removed or retained;
the final number of boxes, actual weight and external dimensions;
the route's chargeable-weight method;
whether any heated clothing, light-up shoes, battery accessory, fur or unusual material changes route eligibility;
the customs description, quantity, material and value data;
the freight quotation and charges explicitly excluded at destination.

Ireland: VAT and the €3 product-type duty

Irish Revenue states that from 1 July 2026, most B2C e-commerce consignments worth €150 or less from outside the EU attract a €3 customs duty for each distinct product type or tariff line. The distinction can matter in a clothing parcel: identical shirts may be one line, while a shirt, footwear and a belt can be different lines. Different materials or functions may also affect classification.

The VAT rate depends on the goods; many ordinary products use Ireland's standard 23% rate. When a valid IOSS arrangement applies, VAT is normally collected at checkout. Without IOSS, import VAT may be collected on arrival and the €3 duty is included in the VAT base. Do not assume that Taobao's displayed price or a forwarding arrangement proves IOSS treatment.

For consignments over €150, ordinary customs duty rules and the actual tariff classification apply. Transport and insurance can form part of the customs or VAT calculation. Keep accurate invoices, product descriptions, quantities, composition and payment records.

If An Post collects import charges, its current information lists a customs administration fee of €6.95 from 3 February 2026 and a 10-working-day payment window before a parcel may be returned. Other operators may charge differently, so confirm the last-mile and excluded costs before dispatch.

A garment decision sheet

For each item, make one row with these fields:

listing and seller;
ordered colour and size;
reference-garment measurements;
seller chart method and tolerance;
fibre composition and special features;
requested warehouse evidence;
evidence received;
return deadline and likely deductions;
decision: keep, exchange, return or hold;
customs description and product type;
packaging instruction.

Only garments marked keep should enter the final consolidation. This sheet prevents a generic “all received” status from becoming permission to export an unresolved size mistake.
