Before buying a charger or small electrical item from Taobao for Australia, check more than the plug shape. Use this buy, ask or skip framework to review ratings, seller evidence, RCM relevance, batteries and shipping limits.
An “AU plug” option is not enough to show that a charger, power board or small electrical product is suitable for Australia. The pins may fit while the rating label is incomplete, the model differs from the listing, or the evidence is inadequate for commercial supply.
Use this page before paying. Your outcome should be buy, ask the seller for evidence, or skip. It is a product-selection and pre-shipment checklist, not an electrical safety certification.

First decide: personal use or supply in Australia?
One charger for your own device and a carton intended for resale are not the same risk.
If you will sell, supply or hire electrical equipment in Australia, the EESS framework may impose obligations on a responsible supplier. The official EESS RCM guidance explains how the Regulatory Compliance Mark relates to electrical-safety and electromagnetic-compatibility requirements. Classification, registration and evidence depend on the equipment and supply situation.
A personal-use purchase does not automatically make you a registered supplier. But personal use does not make an incompatible product a good buy. Check the exact product label, load, device compatibility and transport restrictions. If you plan to resell, do not treat a marketplace screenshot or an RCM symbol in a photo as proof. Obtain Australian compliance advice before committing to stock.
The buy, ask or skip screen
BUY only when all key facts are clear
- Exact model and variant are identified.
- The chosen plug configuration is shown on the actual unit.
- Input and output ratings are visible and suitable for the intended device.
- The seller provides a clear, unedited rating-label photo.
- Cable, connector and stated maximum output match your equipment.
- Any battery is disclosed and a suitable route is confirmed.
- For commercial supply, the Australian compliance path has been checked separately.
ASK before paying when evidence is incomplete
Pause if the listing says “AU plug” but hides the underside label, model number or ratings. Ask for:
- a photo of the exact variant;
- close-ups of the plug and rating plate;
- the model number on the item and box;
- input and output specifications;
- battery type, capacity and whether it is built in;
- the documents or registration details supporting any RCM claim.
A seller response can reveal a mismatch. It does not replace testing, registration or professional compliance advice.
SKIP when the risk cannot be resolved
Skip or source locally when the seller refuses actual-label photos, mixes several models under one specification, offers an adapter as the answer to incompatibility, cannot connect a compliance claim to the exact model, or when no suitable route accepts the battery or product category.
“AU plug” answers only one question

A warehouse photograph can show a mismatch. It cannot confirm internal construction, insulation, temperature rise or long-term safety.
What the RCM can and cannot tell you
The RCM is part of Australia’s compliance system; a printed symbol is not a universal guarantee. For regulated in-scope equipment supplied in Australia, responsible-supplier and equipment-registration obligations may apply.
For a commercial order, connect all evidence to the exact model:
- Does the label model match the unit being ordered?
- Is the claimed supplier or registration traceable?
- Does the evidence cover the same charger, power board or appliance variant?
- Will you personally use the item, or supply it in Australia?
- Has an Australian compliance specialist reviewed the arrangement?

Ask the seller questions that produce evidence
“Is this safe for Australia?” often produces a vague yes. Ask instead:
- “Please photograph the label on the exact AU-plug unit.”
- “Confirm the model number on both product and box.”
- “Show the input and output ratings without editing the photo.”
- “Is a battery included or built in? State its type and capacity.”
- “Show the cable connector at both ends.”
- “If you claim RCM compliance, which exact model and responsible supplier does the evidence cover?”
Save answers with the order. They create a comparison point if a different model arrives while a China domestic return is still possible.

Request a warehouse check that is observable
A practical photo brief can request:
- front and back of the product;
- plug pins from an angle;
- readable rating-label close-up;
- model number on item and packaging;
- cable and both connector ends;
- visible damage or deformation;
- battery label, if accessible without dismantling;
- parcel weight and carton dimensions.
These checks can catch a wrong variant, missing accessory or visible damage. They are not electrical testing, authenticity verification or certification.

Battery products require a separate route decision
A product may be suitable for use but restricted on a specific route. Before purchase identify whether a battery is loose, packed with equipment or installed; its chemistry and capacity; parcel quantity; and whether the planned route accepts that configuration. Confirm any special packing, labelling or document requirement before the seller’s return window closes.
Customs value is not safety approval
Australian Border Force states in its buying online guidance that goods valued at AUD 1,000 or less are generally low-value imports, while goods above AUD 1,000 generally require an Import Declaration and may attract duties, taxes and charges. Exceptions and restricted-goods rules can apply, and GST may be collected at sale.
The value threshold does not approve a product. A low-value parcel can still raise safety, biosecurity, intellectual-property or carrier issues. Use the true purchase value and an accurate description; do not request underdeclaration.
