Compare the complete cost of forwarding purchases from China to the USA. Plan warehouse receipt, eligible free storage, inspection, consolidation, packaging and the final shipping quote before dispatch.
When buying Chinese products from the United States, compare the total cost from the seller to your doorstep, not just the domestic product price plus a shipping rate per kilogram. A cheap but bulky storage box may cost more overall than buying locally. Several small orders from different shops do not necessarily need separate international shipments either.
This guide follows the practical order of decisions: check whether forwarding makes sense before buying, choose packaging after warehouse receipt, and understand the final quote before paying. YDA Express provides purchasing assistance, parcel receiving, photo checks, consolidation and international forwarding. Eligible goods can receive up to 180 days of free storage under the applicable policy. Confirm the arrangement for your products and US delivery address.
1. Purchasing, forwarding and consolidation are different services
If you can place and pay for orders yourself, send them to a China warehouse and arrange forwarding to the USA. If you need help purchasing or communicating with sellers, ask about buying assistance instead.
Consolidation means reorganizing compatible goods from several parcels for international dispatch. It is not a transport method alongside air and sea freight: a consolidated shipment still needs a suitable carrier service.
Decide which tasks you need so that purchasing fees, warehouse handling and international freight are quoted separately. The China parcel forwarding guide explains the basic workflow.
2. Ask four questions before placing orders
How big is the product after packing?
Ask for the packed weight, carton dimensions and whether the item can be folded or disassembled. Net product weight is not enough. Furniture, lighting and storage products especially need a packaging estimate before you compare shipping costs.
Does it need special handling or a particular route?
Send the product link, purpose and material details, including any batteries, liquids or powders, for review. Being available to buy in China does not establish eligibility for your chosen US route. A label such as "sensitive goods" is not a universal acceptance standard.
When do you actually need it?
Event clothing and non-urgent household supplies do not necessarily belong in the same dispatch plan. Give your required arrival date and ask about expected warehouse departure, transit stages and possible delays, rather than asking only for the fastest advertised time.
Where would you resolve a problem with the product?
Keep the order details and seller's terms. Specify any photographs or checks you need and note the return deadline. Long storage can outlast the seller's return window, even when warehouse storage itself is free.
3. Compare the total cost of the same shipment
Not every shipment incurs every charge below. The purpose is to identify what is included and what remains payable.
| Cost stage | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Products and China delivery | Item prices, seller-to-warehouse delivery and any purchasing assistance |
| Warehouse work | Scope and charges for photos, checks, unpacking, consolidation and reinforcement |
| International freight | Service name, chargeable weight, minimum charge and quote validity |
| Surcharges | Oversize, overweight, remote-area delivery or other applicable additions |
| Destination services | Clearance and delivery scope, and who pays duties and taxes |
Do not compare a freight-only quote with one including additional handling and delivery as though they cover the same work. Give each provider the same goods list, packed measurements and delivery ZIP code.
Why can a lightweight parcel still have a high freight charge?
Some services compare actual weight with volumetric weight and use the larger figure. DHL eCommerce's chargeable-weight explanation describes this approach for its service. Confirm the conversion and rounding rules for the route you are using; one divisor does not apply to every carrier or product.
Provide both weight and dimensions for an estimate. Reconfirm the quote using the final measurements after packing. A pre-purchase estimate helps you decide whether to buy; it is not necessarily the final invoice.
4. Use free storage to coordinate orders, not to postpone checks
Up to 180 days of free storage for eligible goods can help bring together purchases from Taobao, JD.com, 1688, Pinduoduo and other sellers. Check the free warehouse storage policy for conditions.
You do not need to wait the full period, and longer storage does not automatically save money. Set a cutoff date for each shipment:
- Dispatch items that have arrived, passed your requested checks and are needed soon.
- Consider moving delayed or unconfirmed orders to the next shipment.
- Deal with returns and missing items promptly instead of waiting to fill a carton.
- Confirm eligibility and storage requirements for products with expiry dates or special properties before buying.
Storage helps with different arrival dates. Whether consolidation reduces the total cost still depends on the final packing and available quotes.
5. Give specific packing instructions
Instead of writing only "save on shipping," separate your instructions into three groups.
Packaging that may be removed: identify unnecessary outer shipping cartons and goods that may be compressed.
Packaging that must stay: mark gift boxes, original protective inserts, accessories and manuals. Do not strip protection from fragile products just to make the carton smaller.
Goods requiring separate treatment: flag items that may be crushed, leak or need a special shipping route. Confirm whether they can travel with the rest.
After packing, check item quantities, carton count, and each carton's weight and dimensions. Compare one shipment with sensible separation. One large box is not always cheaper than two suitable smaller boxes, and not all products qualify for the same service.
Photographs help check visible condition and quantities. They do not replace professional testing, authentication or a complete functional examination. Specify any deeper inspection before it is carried out.
6. Ask where the delivery estimate starts and ends
Express, air and sea options depend on the goods, ZIP code, budget, deadline and current service availability. A route name alone does not describe the whole service.
- Does the estimate begin at warehouse dispatch, carrier collection or departure from China?
- Is it stated in working or calendar days, and does it include waiting, clearance and final delivery?
- Is delivery to your home included, or must you collect the shipment?
- Who contacts you if inspection, address corrections or extra documents are required?
There is no single transit time or tax promise that fits every parcel. Confirm current destination requirements and prepare accurate product names, quantities, values and purchase records. Do not substitute vague descriptions for the actual goods.
7. Follow the order from purchase to receipt
- Request an estimate: provide product links, quantities, packing information, the US ZIP code and your deadline.
- Obtain your warehouse details: use the address and customer identifier supplied for your account, not another buyer's example.
- Record domestic tracking: keep each seller order and tracking number so receipt can be reconciled.
- Complete warehouse checks: review quantities, specifications and photos; resolve wrong or missing goods before dispatch.
- Approve packing and the final quote: confirm what stays packed, what ships separately and which charges are included.
- Track and receive: watch for notifications. If packaging or goods arrive damaged, keep the packaging, photographs and relevant records and contact support promptly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I forward only one item?
Ask for a suitable quote. You do not need to buy unwanted goods to fill a box. Compare the complete forwarding cost with other available purchase and delivery options.
Must purchases from different platforms ship together?
No. Consolidation is optional. Decide based on product compatibility, protection, waiting time and the final quote.
Does free storage mean every service is free?
No. Storage covers holding eligible goods under the policy. Purchasing, checks, packaging and transport must be reviewed separately.
What if I cannot place the order myself?
Send the product links and requirements to YDA Express. Confirm specifications, quantities, fees and scope before authorizing a purchase.
Prepare these details for your quote
Send product links or clear photos, quantities, available packed weights and dimensions, any batteries or liquids, fragile-item details, your US ZIP code and desired arrival date. State whether you need purchasing help, photographs, inspection, original packaging or consolidation.
If measurements are not yet available, say so. A clear product list and cost breakdown is more useful than a lowest-price-per-kilogram figure on its own.
