Calculate the real cost of buying from China to Sweden before checkout, including freight, Swedish VAT, customs duty and PostNord declaration fees.
Buying from China to Sweden is only a bargain when the price at checkout still makes sense after freight, tax and handling. Before paying, build one landed-cost worksheet for the exact product and shipping route. That worksheet—not the product-page price—should decide whether you buy, consolidate or walk away.
Information and official links checked on 27 September 2026. Customs treatment depends on the goods, value, origin and declaration. Confirm the current rule for your shipment before payment.
The seven lines in a Sweden landed-cost worksheet
Use one currency and record the source for every number:
- product price after seller discounts;
- domestic delivery from the seller to the China warehouse;
- purchasing or payment-service fees, if used;
- repacking, insurance and international freight;
- customs duty or other product-specific charges;
- Swedish import VAT;
- the carrier's customs-declaration or administration fee, plus any local delivery or return cost.
Ask for the packed weight and dimensions before you approve international shipping. Air and express services can charge by volumetric weight, so a light but bulky carton may cost more than expected. If you are buying from several sellers, a China shopping agent can coordinate local purchasing and receipt, but its service fee belongs in the same worksheet.
Start with the correct import scenario
Personal purchase or business stock?
This guide is for an individual buying for personal use. Goods intended for resale or business activity may require a commercial importer, EORI, VAT accounting and product-compliance work. Do not label a resale shipment as a gift or personal parcel.
Was VAT actually collected at checkout?
Do not rely on a banner saying “tax included.” Check the order record for the tax amount, the responsible seller or marketplace, and whether an IOSS number is being used for an eligible low-value shipment. The IOSS number is normally transmitted in the electronic customs data; it should not be printed publicly on a parcel.
Swedish Customs states that all imported goods must be declared and that supporting documents can be requested. It also explains that IOSS may be used in qualifying cases. Review the Swedish Customs import-declaration guidance rather than assuming a marketplace has completed the process.
How Swedish VAT and PostNord fees change the result
PostNord's published guidance normally applies 25% VAT to the shipment value including freight. Its current private-customer page lists a SEK 100 fee including VAT for a simplified declaration and SEK 175 including VAT for a standard declaration. It also describes the EU low-value customs change effective from 1 July 2026: a EUR 3 duty can apply to goods up to EUR 150, while goods above EUR 150 are assessed according to value and product classification. Restricted and excise goods can require different handling.
Check the current PostNord VAT and customs FAQ for the parcel type you expect. These figures are inputs, not a universal quote: another carrier can use a different clearance model, and the final assessment belongs to the authorities and carrier.
A practical formula
Use this planning formula:
Estimated landed cost = goods + China delivery + service fees + international freight + duty + import VAT + carrier clearance fee + final-delivery or return reserve
Keep the commercial invoice, payment record, product description and freight amount together. A low seller declaration is not a saving strategy: it can lead to questions, reassessment, delay or loss of insurance protection.
Consolidate only when the carton becomes better
Consolidation can reduce duplicate outer packaging and replace several international minimum charges with one shipment. It is most useful when multiple compatible orders arrive within a short period and the combined carton remains compact.
It is not automatically cheaper. Mixing liquids, batteries, magnets, branded goods, fragile items or restricted products can reduce route choices. A large box can also increase volumetric weight. Use the package-consolidation guide to decide whether to remove seller packaging, separate sensitive items or send in more than one batch.
Before approving consolidation, request:
- a list of every parcel and quantity received;
- photos that can reveal obvious colour, model or visible-damage errors;
- the proposed carton count, packed dimensions and gross weight;
- a note of any item that changes the available route;
- separate quotations for one consolidated carton and sensible split options.
Photos are not laboratory testing and cannot prove authenticity, hidden defects or regulatory compliance.
Three go/no-go checks before payment
Go: the total still beats a Swedish alternative
Compare the landed-cost estimate with a Swedish or EU seller offering equivalent specifications, warranty and return rights. A small price gap may not compensate for a difficult international return.
Pause: the product description is too vague
Ask the seller to confirm material, size, model, power or plug specification, included accessories and packaging. Save the answers in the order record. For categories such as cosmetics, food, medicines, radio equipment, batteries or children's goods, check import and product rules before buying.
Stop: the route depends on concealment or false data
Do not proceed if the plan requires an inaccurate value, misleading description, removed safety label or undeclared restricted content. Choose a compliant route or change the product.
