Plan your first Taobao order from France: choose direct checkout, forwarding or purchasing help, verify payment and product details, and confirm costs before dispatch.
You can plan a Taobao purchase from France in two stages: first decide who will place and manage the Chinese order, then confirm how the goods will reach your French address. Check the delivery and payment options shown for your actual item and account. If no suitable France delivery option appears, a China forwarding address may work; if you also need help buying, choose a purchasing service rather than forwarding alone.
This guide is for a personal first order delivered to metropolitan France. It is not a commercial-import compliance checklist, and overseas French territories need a separate delivery and tax check.
1. Choose the buying route before paying
Use a platform delivery option when it is actually offered. Enter your destination and review the eligible items, final delivery arrangement, charges and return terms. Do not assume that a delivery option available for one listing applies to another.
Buy yourself and use forwarding when you can manage the order. You remain responsible for selecting the variant, paying the seller and opening after-sales requests. The warehouse receives and forwards the parcel; receiving it does not transfer control of your Taobao account to the warehouse.
Use an agent when you need purchasing help. Send the product link, exact colour, size, quantity and any condition the seller must confirm. Ask who controls the order, how approval works and where a refund would be credited. Compare purchasing assistance and parcel forwarding before choosing.
Do not give an agent your bank verification codes or assume they need your Taobao password to purchase through their own account.
2. Treat payment acceptance as an order-specific check
Alipay publishes support information about international-card payments, but that is not a guarantee that a particular French-issued card will complete every Taobao transaction. Use the options displayed at checkout and review any service charge, currency conversion and bank authentication request before authorising payment.
If payment fails, first check whether the order is unpaid and whether the bank entry is pending rather than settled. Keep the error message and contact the payment provider or bank through official channels. Avoid repeatedly paying or moving to an unfamiliar off-platform payment link just because a seller requests it.
With an agent, confirm the payment method and total purchasing charge in that service's checkout. A product payment does not automatically include international freight or French import charges. Ask how cancellations, currency differences and non-refundable charges are handled.
3. Make a first-order specification you can verify
For each item, record the listing link, selected variant, quantity, seller's size measurements, material and included accessories. A label such as M or L is less useful than measurements compared with an item you already own.
For a small first order, favour products whose condition can be checked visibly. Before purchasing batteries, liquids, cosmetics or branded products, send the specifications to the shipping provider for acceptance checks. Do not order counterfeit goods. A seller's willingness to send an item within China does not establish that it can be imported into France.
Save the listing and order confirmation. These records help resolve a mismatch and support an accurate goods declaration later.
4. Separate the China receiving address from the France delivery address
When forwarding, copy the assigned Chinese warehouse address and customer identifier exactly. Use the warehouse's provided recipient and contact details for the domestic leg, not an invented translation or a French phone number substituted into the Chinese address.
Keep each seller's tracking number and tell the warehouse about split parcels. Ask for checks that match your decision: quantity, visible colour, labels or included accessories. Photos cannot certify authenticity, hidden faults or a perfect fit.
Provide the French delivery address separately: recipient name, building or apartment details, street number and name, postcode, town and country, plus reachable contact information in the carrier's required fields. Confirm any access instructions before dispatch.
5. Approve the goods before the international shipment
If a parcel contains the wrong variant or missing parts, ask the warehouse to hold it while the person controlling the Taobao order contacts the seller. Check the actual after-sales deadline; time spent in storage does not extend it.
Agree who arranges the domestic return and who pays each charge. Do not approve consolidation merely because every parcel has arrived. Removing retail packaging can make a later return harder, so give packaging instructions only after checking the goods.
6. Compare the total, not just the listing price
Budget for products, China domestic delivery, any purchasing or payment charges, requested warehouse services, international freight and destination charges. Ask whether the freight estimate uses actual or dimensional weight and obtain a final packed quote before approving dispatch. The shipping calculator is a starting point, not a substitute for confirming the final shipment.
Tax check: 24 September 2026. Imported online purchases are subject to VAT from the first euro. France Customs also describes the temporary €3 customs-duty mechanism applying from 1 July 2026 to qualifying distance-sale imports up to €150. It is not a universal €3 total per parcel. Do not budget using the old blanket claim that purchases under €150 are duty-free. Check the official scope and calculation rules.
Ask whether taxes are prepaid or collected from you, which handling fees remain possible and what written terms cover the route. Do not assume a separately forwarded purchase has valid IOSS coverage.
