Compare international and domestic Chinese shopping platforms. Learn when to buy directly, use a China warehouse, choose parcel forwarding, or work with a purchasing agent.

Buying from China starts with one decision that is easy to overlook: do you need an international-facing marketplace, or do you want access to a Chinese domestic shopping platform?
The first route is usually easier. The second can offer a wider domestic catalog, but it may require a China warehouse address, local purchasing help and a separate international shipment. This guide helps overseas buyers choose the right route before they spend time comparing individual products.
Two Buying Routes, Not One List of “Best” Platforms
International-facing marketplaces are designed to serve buyers outside China. They commonly provide multilingual pages, overseas checkout and cross-border delivery. AliExpress is aimed mainly at retail purchases, while Alibaba.com is structured around international business sourcing.
Chinese domestic marketplaces serve customers inside China first. Taobao, Tmall, 1688, JD.com, Pinduoduo, Weidian and Xianyu differ in audience and product type, but overseas buyers often encounter the same practical questions: Can I register? Can I pay for this listing? Will the seller deliver to a China warehouse? How will I inspect, combine and ship the order internationally?
Neither route is automatically cheaper or better. The right choice depends on the product, quantity, seller risk and total landed cost.

When an International-Facing Platform Makes More Sense
Choose an international marketplace when simplicity matters more than access to the full domestic catalog. It is often the practical route when:
- You are buying one or two common products;
- The listing supports your destination and preferred payment method;
- You want one checkout that includes international delivery;
- The seller provides export-ready documents or buyer protection relevant to the transaction;
- You do not need several orders combined in China.
This route still requires careful checking. A translated listing can hide differences in size, voltage, plug type, included accessories or warranty coverage. “Free shipping” also does not mean that duties, taxes or local handling charges are included. Confirm the exact product variation, seller terms, tracking method and return conditions before paying.
When a Chinese Domestic Platform Is Worth the Extra Steps
Domestic platforms become useful when the required product, seller or price is not available through an international storefront.
Taobao and Tmall
Taobao is useful for broad retail variety, niche items, accessories, home products and products from many independent sellers. Tmall places more emphasis on established merchants and official brand storefronts. Store identity still needs to be checked at listing level.
1688
1688 is designed primarily for domestic wholesale. It suits buyers comparing suppliers, tiered prices, samples, packaging or larger quantities. A low displayed price may apply only to a particular variation or quantity, so confirm the minimum order, specification, domestic freight and production time.
JD.com
JD.com is commonly considered for electronics, appliances and branded consumer goods. Buyers should distinguish JD self-operated listings, official stores and independent marketplace sellers. Chinese-market voltage, plugs, network compatibility and warranty arrangements may differ overseas.
Pinduoduo, Weidian and Xianyu
These platforms can provide access to low-cost domestic products, social sellers, collectibles or second-hand goods, but they generally require more seller checking. Payment, returns and overseas delivery can be less straightforward. If checkout is the immediate obstacle, review the guide to paying on Pinduoduo from overseas.
Direct Purchase, Parcel Forwarding or Purchasing Agent?
Once you choose a domestic platform, select the service model that matches what you can already do.
Buy directly if your account, payment method and delivery option work and you understand the listing. Where available, you may enter a China warehouse address instead of an overseas address.
Use parcel forwarding if you can place and pay for the order yourself but need a China address, package receiving, storage, consolidation or international delivery. A forwarder does not necessarily negotiate with the seller or buy the item for you. Read the China parcel-forwarding guide before entering a warehouse address.
Use a purchasing agent if you need help paying the seller, confirming a variation, communicating in Chinese or coordinating a domestic return. The agent purchases according to your submitted link and instructions, receives the parcel and can arrange later shipping services. Learn what a China shopping agent does before comparing providers.
Compare the Complete Cost Before Ordering
The domestic product price is only one part of the decision. Estimate:
- Product price and quantity;
- Chinese domestic delivery;
- Purchasing, payment or inspection fees;
- Storage, consolidation and repacking charges, if applicable;
- International shipping based on actual or dimensional weight;
- Insurance or special handling;
- Destination duties, taxes and customs-related charges.
A cheaper listing can produce a higher total cost when it is bulky, difficult to pack, restricted on common routes or expensive to return. Ask for a shipping estimate before buying large, heavy or unusually shaped products. Never ask a seller or forwarder to misdescribe the goods or declare an artificial value.
Use the China Warehouse as a Control Point
A warehouse is more than a delivery address. It gives you an opportunity to catch visible problems before international shipping and to combine compatible orders from different sellers.
Before consolidation, check the package photos, quantity, color, size and visible condition. Basic photo inspection cannot prove authenticity or test every function, so request a more detailed inspection when the order is high value, customized or specification-sensitive.
YDA Express can provide purchasing assistance, China warehouse receiving, inspection photos, package management, consolidation and international shipping. Eligible ordinary goods may be stored free for up to 180 days, allowing orders placed at different times to be shipped together. Confirm current storage terms and route eligibility for unusual or restricted products.
A Five-Step Decision Checklist
Before choosing a platform, answer these questions:
- Is the exact product available on an international-facing marketplace?
- Can you verify the seller and exact variation?
- Can you complete payment yourself?
- Does the listing support direct overseas delivery, or only a Chinese address?
- After adding all fees and import costs, is the domestic-platform route still worthwhile?
If all five answers are clear, proceed with the route that offers the best balance of access, cost and control. If payment or seller communication is the only obstacle, use a purchasing agent. If purchasing is easy but shipping is not, use a parcel-forwarding service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can overseas buyers purchase directly from Chinese domestic platforms?
Sometimes. Registration, payment and delivery availability vary by platform, seller, product, account and destination. Check the current checkout options instead of assuming every listing works the same way.
Is 1688 always cheaper than Alibaba.com?
No. 1688 may show lower domestic prices, while Alibaba.com may include export-oriented service and easier international transactions. Compare the final quantity, specifications, domestic freight, service fees and international shipping.
Can orders from different platforms be consolidated?
Often, yes, when they arrive at the same warehouse and the products are compatible with the chosen shipping route. Batteries, liquids, powders, magnets, oversized goods and some branded products may need separate handling or may not be accepted on a route.
Should first-time buyers use an agent?
An agent is useful when you cannot pay the seller, understand the listing or manage a domestic return. If you can order independently, forwarding alone may be sufficient.
