Taobao to Iceland: Consolidate or Split Your Orders? Fees, VAT and Chargeable Weight Before Checkout

Buying from several Taobao sellers for delivery to Iceland? Use this decision guide to compare consolidation, split parcels, chargeable weight, import VAT and carrier handling before you approve international shipping.

Buying from several Taobao sellers for delivery to Iceland creates one decision that should not be left until the warehouse is ready to ship: should you consolidate everything into one carton, or send two or more parcels?

There is no automatic winner. One carton can reduce repeated base freight and handling, but a bulky mixed shipment can be charged by dimensional weight and may need more customs lines. Separate parcels can protect fragile or restricted items, yet each shipment can create another clearance or carrier fee. The useful comparison is the total delivered cost of each packing plan—not the cheapest product price and not the lightest-looking box.

This guide is for personal buyers in Iceland who have selected ordinary consumer goods on Taobao and are deciding how to move them from a China warehouse. Commercial quantities, food, medicines, animal products, radio equipment and other controlled goods need separate checks.

Rules and public fees checked: 2 October 2026. Icelandic tax, postal and carrier charges can change, and the final treatment depends on the goods and declaration.

The quick decision: consolidate compatible goods, separate incompatible risks

Consolidation usually deserves a quote when the orders are ordinary, dry, non-hazardous goods that can share one protective carton. Splitting is often safer when one item changes the transport route, needs rigid protection, creates unusual dimensions or could delay the rest of the shipment.

Before choosing, place each item in one of three groups:

  1. Easy to combine: folded clothing, small accessories, stationery and similar ordinary goods.
  2. Needs packing separation: fragile décor, sharp parts, crush-sensitive boxes or products that can leak or stain.
  3. Needs route confirmation first: batteries, liquids, aerosols, magnets, powders, branded goods or products subject to destination controls.

Do not place group three into the main carton until the forwarder confirms an available route. A seller's ability to send an item inside China does not prove that it can move internationally or enter Iceland.

Build two quotes from the same warehouse evidence

Ask the warehouse for the actual weight and outer dimensions of each parcel before repacking. Then request two packing scenarios:

  • Plan A — one consolidated carton: remove unnecessary seller packaging where appropriate, protect fragile pieces and report the final carton size and weight.
  • Plan B — two or more parcels: keep fragile, bulky or route-sensitive items separate and report each parcel's size and weight.

Compare the plans using the same cost headings:

Cost item One consolidated carton Split parcels
China domestic delivery Already paid to reach the warehouse Already paid to reach the warehouse
Packing or reinforcement One packing job, but possibly more complex Repeated packing materials and labour
International freight One shipment; may reduce repeated minimum charges Several shipment minimums or base charges
Chargeable weight One large carton may trigger dimensional weight Smaller cartons may fit the route better
Iceland import charges Based on declared goods, value and classification Assessed for each shipment as processed
Carrier or postal handling Usually one processing event May repeat for each parcel
Delay exposure One problem can hold the whole carton A problem may affect only one parcel

If you are new to the warehouse stage, the Taobao forwarding guide explains how seller parcels are received, recorded and prepared before international dispatch.

Chargeable weight can reverse the answer

International freight may be calculated using actual weight or dimensional weight, depending on the service. Dimensional weight reflects the space occupied by the packed carton. A light but oversized carton can therefore cost more than a smaller, heavier one.

Consolidation helps when repacking removes empty space and duplicate seller cartons. It hurts when unrelated shapes force the warehouse to use an oversized box. A long object, rigid gift box or fragile lamp can determine the dimensions of the entire shipment.

Ask for the packed measurements, not an estimate based on product-page dimensions. Then ask which divisor and rounding rules apply to the available route. Do not assume that vacuum compression, removal of retail boxes or aggressive repacking is suitable for every product; those choices can damage structured clothing, collectible packaging or fragile surfaces.

Iceland fees make parcel count relevant

Iceland Revenue and Customs explains that import charges can include customs duty, excise duty, VAT and recycling or processing-related charges, depending on the tariff classification. The standard VAT rate applied to many imported goods is 24%, while certain categories use other treatment.

Iceland Post's information for shipments from abroad also makes an important distinction: government import charges and the carrier's processing or delivery charges are not the same thing. Its published rates include customs-declaration and handling services, and some declarations may incur additional-line charges.

That changes the packing decision in two ways:

  • Splitting a low-risk basket can repeat shipment-level processing costs.
  • Combining many different product types can increase declaration complexity and documentation needs.

Do not treat consolidation as a way to hide product lines or values. Each item still needs an accurate description, quantity and value. The carrier or customs broker—not the China warehouse—determines the final declaration format and charges.

A five-question approval gate

Approve the packing plan only after you can answer these questions:

  1. Will any item force a different route? If yes, separate it until the route is confirmed.
  2. Will consolidation actually reduce the final outer volume? Compare measured cartons, not seller estimates.
  3. Can fragile and soft goods share one box safely? If not, split or specify internal protection.
  4. Do you have the invoice and truthful description for every product line? Missing evidence can delay clearance.
  5. Is the saving larger than the extra risk? A small freight reduction may not justify combining an uncertain or fragile item with the rest.

If Plan A and Plan B are close in price, choose the plan that makes inspection, packing and customs evidence clearer. The cheapest quote is not automatically the lowest-risk delivered option.

What YDA Express can and cannot do

YDA Express can assist with purchasing, seller communication, China warehouse receiving, parcel records, agreed photo checks, consolidation, repacking and comparison of available international shipping options. Buyers who can pay sellers themselves may use only the forwarding and warehouse services they need. The China shopping-platform comparison can help you decide whether direct ordering, forwarding or purchasing assistance fits your situation.

YDA Express cannot determine Iceland's final HS classification, guarantee a tax amount, obtain an import permit on the buyer's behalf or guarantee customs clearance. The Icelandic recipient remains responsible for accurate information and any destination requirements.

Before requesting a quote, send the Taobao links, quantities, Icelandic postal code, product restrictions if known and the checks you want at the warehouse. Ask for both consolidation and split-parcel measurements before authorising dispatch.
