Taobao or 1688 for Switzerland: Personal Shopping vs Business Sourcing

Choose Taobao for consumer-style purchases or 1688 for supplier sourcing, then plan China warehouse handling, Swiss import VAT, declarations and delivery before paying.

For a buyer in Switzerland, Taobao and 1688 solve different purchasing problems. Taobao is usually the better starting point for personal or small mixed purchases; 1688 is designed more around domestic wholesale and supplier sourcing. Choose by quantity, documents and after-sales needs—not only the lowest listing price.

Before paying, confirm the exact goods, who controls the seller order, whether a China warehouse can receive them, which international service accepts them, and how Swiss import VAT and carrier clearance fees will be handled.

Choose the platform that matches the order

Taobao: consumer choice and small quantities

Taobao can suit clothing, shoes, home items and accessories from several retail sellers. Use it when you want one item, a small quantity or several styles for personal use.

Confirm the selected size, colour, model and included accessories. A low product price still needs to be compared with Chinese domestic delivery, warehouse work, international freight, Swiss import charges and the difficulty of returning an item after export.

1688: samples and supplier sourcing

1688 can suit a Swiss business testing samples, comparing suppliers or planning repeat orders. Ask about minimum quantity, specification, commercial packaging, production lead time and documents before paying.

A supplier listing is not proof of manufacturing capacity, product conformity or permission to sell the product in Switzerland. Sampling, supplier checks and compliance are separate decisions. See the 1688 agent guide for the purchasing workflow.

Separate personal shopping from commercial importing

A personal order is normally for the buyer’s own use. A commercial order may involve resale, company equipment, samples or repeated imports. Business buyers should prepare the importer name, invoice, packing information, product description, tariff classification and any required conformity documents.

Warehouse photographs can confirm visible details within an agreed scope. They do not certify safety, authenticity, Swiss conformity or suitability for resale.

Decide whether you need purchasing assistance

If you can operate the platform, pay the seller and manage messages, buy directly and use only warehouse forwarding. Purchasing assistance may help with domestic payment, Chinese communication, specification confirmation or sample ordering.

Before authorising a purchase, confirm the service fee, exchange basis, return process and who controls the platform order. A warehouse receiving a parcel does not automatically control the seller conversation. The shopping-agent platform guide explains how purchasing and forwarding responsibilities differ.

Check the goods before ordering

Record for every item:

  • product and seller link;
  • variation, size, model and quantity;
  • material, intended use and brand;
  • battery, liquid, powder, magnet or other sensitive content;
  • estimated dimensions and weight;
  • packaging that must be kept;
  • documents needed for Swiss use or sale.

Domestic delivery within China does not establish that the item can use an international route or enter the Swiss market.

Use the China warehouse as a decision point

Enter the assigned recipient, telephone, address and customer identifier exactly as provided. Register every Chinese domestic tracking number because one order can arrive in several parcels.

At receipt, compare the expected items with the warehouse record. Request checks that matter to your decision, such as visible colour, size label, quantity or exterior condition. Resolve wrong items before international dispatch; warehouse storage does not extend the seller’s return period.

Eligible ordinary goods may qualify for up to 180 days of free storage. When several parcels are ready, compare consolidation with separate shipment. The package consolidation guide explains why final dimensions, protection and route compatibility matter.

Swiss import VAT and clearance costs

The Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security states that foreign postal and courier consignments must be declared. The carrier normally handles the declaration and can charge a clearance fee in addition to state taxes and duties. Review the official Swiss guidance for online purchases.

Current Swiss VAT rates include the 8.1% standard rate and a 2.6% reduced rate for specified categories. Check the current categories on the Swiss Federal Tax Administration VAT page.

The import-tax basis can include the product value plus relevant costs to the destination, such as transport, insurance and customs clearance when not already included. Do not budget VAT from the product price alone.

Import tax may not be collected when the calculated tax amount is CHF 5 or less, but this is not a universal tax-free merchandise threshold. The result depends on the VAT rate, taxable basis and whether Swiss VAT is charged under mail-order or platform rules. Keep checkout invoices and parcel declarations consistent.

Industrial tariffs were removed, but formalities remain

Switzerland abolished import tariffs on industrial products from 1 January 2024. The change covers industrial products in HS Chapters 25–97, while agricultural products and specified exceptions remain outside it.

It does not remove the import declaration, correct classification, import VAT, product restrictions, carrier fees or other product-specific charges. Read the official SECO explanation before interpreting “zero customs duty” as “nothing to pay”.

Compare the delivered cost

Build one worksheet covering:

  1. product price and Chinese delivery;
  2. purchasing help, if used;
  3. warehouse checks and returns;
  4. consolidation and protection;
  5. international freight and insurance;
  6. Swiss VAT and any remaining duties or levies;
  7. carrier clearance fees;
  8. delivery to the final Swiss postcode.

Request an estimate before buying and a parcel-specific quote after final packing. Large but light goods may be charged by dimensional weight.

What YDA Express can help with

Within a confirmed scope, YDA Express can assist with purchasing from Chinese platforms, China warehouse receiving, product check photos, package management, consolidation and international forwarding.

Send the platform links, selected variations, quantities, personal or commercial use, product attributes and Swiss postcode. Route acceptance, tax, compliance and final delivery conditions must still be confirmed for the actual goods.

Choose Taobao for consumer selection and small quantities. Choose 1688 for supplier comparison, samples or commercial sourcing. In both cases follow the same sequence:

define the use → confirm the product → choose who controls the purchase → receive and check in China → approve packing → confirm Swiss import and delivery costs → dispatch.
